Common Dental Emergencies & First Aid

Knocked-Out Tooth

Time is critical — you have about 30 minutes.

  • Pick up the tooth by the crown (white part), never the root
  • If dirty, rinse gently with milk or saline — don't scrub
  • Try to place it back in the socket and bite down gently on a cloth
  • If you can't reinsert it, keep it in milk or between your cheek and gum
  • Get to a dentist within 30 minutes for the best chance of saving the tooth
  • Severe Toothache

  • Rinse with warm salt water
  • Take ibuprofen (NOT aspirin, which can increase bleeding)
  • Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek
  • Don't place aspirin directly on the gum — this causes chemical burns
  • See a dentist as soon as possible
  • Broken or Chipped Tooth

  • Rinse your mouth with warm water
  • If bleeding, apply gauze for 10 minutes
  • Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling
  • Save any broken pieces
  • Cover sharp edges with dental wax or sugar-free gum temporarily
  • Lost Crown or Filling

  • If you have the crown, try to slip it back over the tooth using denture adhesive or toothpaste as temporary cement
  • Don't use regular glue
  • Avoid chewing on that side
  • See a dentist within 24-48 hours
  • Abscess (Swelling with Pus)

This is serious — infection can spread.

  • Rinse with mild salt water several times a day
  • Take over-the-counter pain medication
  • Don't try to drain it yourself
  • See a dentist or visit an emergency room immediately
  • When to Go to the Hospital Instead

Go to the nearest hospital emergency room (not a dental clinic) if:

  • You have uncontrolled bleeding that won't stop after 20 minutes of pressure
  • You have facial swelling affecting breathing or swallowing
  • You have a jaw fracture (unable to open or close your mouth)
  • You've had trauma to the face/head with possible concussion
  • Major hospitals with dental emergency support:

  • Dubai Health Authority hospitals (Rashid Hospital, Dubai Hospital)
  • Mediclinic City Hospital
  • American Hospital Dubai
  • Insurance Coverage for Dental Emergencies

Most Dubai health insurance plans cover emergency dental treatment, including:

  • Emergency consultation and X-rays
  • Emergency extractions
  • Treatment to relieve acute pain
  • Check your policy for: Annual limits, co-payment amounts, and whether you need pre-authorization. In a true emergency, most insurers allow you to seek treatment first and file claims later.

Tips for Tourists with Dental Emergencies

  • Keep your travel insurance details handy — most policies cover emergency dental up to a limit
  • Call your hotel concierge — they often have contacts with English-speaking dentists
  • Bring your dental records if you're traveling for dental treatment
  • DHA-licensed clinics are regulated — look for the DHA license number displayed in the clinic
